Jagdish is an old friend. Over the countless chit-chats with him, somewhere he figured out that I wanted a wet bar and a separate barbeque courtyard, but I wasn’t ready to sacrifice any part of my lawn or garden. Jagdish turned a forgotten corner where I stored my gas cylinders into a bar (with space for two cylinders built in!) and turned an overgrown patch above the lawn into a circular brickwork courtyard. Now my wife and I have endless get-togethers thanks to my friend’s creative genius!

His commitment to eco-friendly practices goes beyond the structures, reflecting a holistic approach to construction. An engineer by profession and social worker by passion, Jagdish Bhandari left his government job to join an NGO. Eventually, he established his own construction company while continuing to contribute time and resources to social causes. He has been helping me maintain my heritage homestay resort which was built in the 1950s. He handles his professional and social projects with equal honesty and dedication.

Jagdish Bhandari’s style is a unique medley of old and new elements. For instance, he would clad a sitout floor with recycled stone slabs and retrofit doors with old wood.   With this, he would blend   things like spotless white uPVC windows with huge glass panes that give a heritage house  an old-world charm, with new-age comforts.

Figuring out from where water can come gushing down during heavy rain needs deep understanding of mountain topography and rain tracks. Fortunately, I had Jagdish Bhandari to figure all this out and build waterways that not only addressed the risk of landslides but also added to the beauty of my garden.

The snow peaks were visible only from one end of our plot. That’s when we met Jagdish. He sugested a design that used columns of different heights on the mountain slope to not only raise our upper floor, but also rotate the orientation of our cottage just enough  to give us a panoramic view of the entire range from our master bedroom window.
